One of the most interesting people in the world in the light of history
Many times, when something or someone with historical significance is happening, you can’t really see it at the time. Only later is the impact seen, with long term changes in society revealing themselves. The COVID-19 fiasco may quality as one of these. I believe another one will be the emergence of Elon Musk on the world stage.
Elon will not be significant because he was the world’s richest man. Not even because he popularized electric cars. He will be significant because he has done more to preserve free speech in America than anyone else, politician or not. At great personal cost ($44 billion) he bought Twitter, which was then, and is now, the dominant social media platform for news. At that time Twitter, along with all the other social media platforms, had begun to actively censor conservative voices on things like Covid, global warming, and the dangers of transitioning minors. This put them in lockstep with the traditional network legacy media (ABC, CBS, NBC) along with CNN and MSNBC. Fox News and Newsmax are strong conservative oriented platforms, but are in the broadcast/web media world, which primarily appeals to older viewers. The vast majority of younger viewers get their news/commentary from social media platforms. Even traditional media platforms get many of their stories from Twitter, now X. This means social media dominants both the present and the future of information. Until Musk broke the media cartel, it looked all but certain that we were doomed to be live in a left wing propaganda driven society that looked more and more like communist China than the United States. Now it looks like the media landscape has been permanently changed.
Elon Musk broke the mold of the recent trend of the new, mostly tech driven billionaires. For some bizarre reason, almost all of these highly visible billionaires made their fortunes through conservative principles – hard work, creativity, risk taking, etc., and then ran to the left once they arrived. We can only speculate on motivations. Maybe former nerds want to hang with the cool crowd in NYC and DC, which are hard left. Maybe they’ve picked up socialism subconsciously in our culture and education system and are attempting to virtue signal by helping ‘marginalized people’, whatever that means. I write about this flimsy morality and false guilt in the elite in my book Modern Paganism.
Elon Musk seems to be refreshingly immune from such pitfalls. Perhaps because he was an immigrant himself, who desired the American dream, he did not behave like a spoiled teenager who had no appreciation for the values he grew up with once he got his wealth. Rather than participate in the censorship of the left, he had a visceral reaction to it. A former Democrat voter, he has moved strongly to the right, to the point of being Trump’s most influential ally, both pre and post-election. After securing X as the dominant platform for free speech, he is working around the clock in the Trump administration to expose massive amounts of waste and fraud, to the delight of millions of patriotic Americans. Again, he has done this at a great personal expense, as he is the CEO of several of the world’s largest corporations and had to divert a significant amount of his energies away to accomplish this mission.
So what does this have to do with the ‘sovereignty of God’? Several months ago, in my post A Christian Response to the Election, I dealt with the issue of God’s involvement in governments, stating, “… a cursory reading of scripture, especially the Old Testament, reveals that God does intervene in the affairs of nations, for various purposes”. I then exhorted the readers to not only vote, but pray, which is even more influential than voting. We pray for God to install his leaders and more importantly, for light to shine in dark places. I believe a lot of believers have been praying for our nation. What is Twitter/X exposing the Biden administration coercing media companies to censor news if not light shining in a dark place? What is Elon Musk, through DOGE exposing billions of dollars of waste, fraud, and deception if not light shining in a dark place? As Christian author Douglas Wilson (@douglaswils) posted on X,

I can picture some of my fellow believers hyperventilating right now. Are you saying Elon Musk is a Christian?! Not at all. Although I do believe he is truly motivated to help people, which has been a governing principle through all his companies, I have not seen or heard anything from him to indicate he is a follower of Jesus Christ. I do pray he becomes one. But the scripture indicates that sometimes God’s instruments are not necessarily believers, as in King Cyrus of Persia (Isaiah 45:1), who was used to greatly help the Jewish people. He uses who is available, and Elon’s altruistic heart with his immense wealth seems to have made him a candidate to accomplish much good. The stream of human history is being altered right in front of our eyes in amazing ways.
Keep praying.
