If so, what does that mean?
As we celebrate Easter this weekend, I thought it would be good to be reminded of our rich Christian heritage and what it should mean to us.
Last year the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ordered the Washington Metro Transit Authority to run ads on their buses that they had earlier banned, citing a violation of First Amendment rights. All of the ads were from WallBuilders, an organization dedicated to educating people about America’s Christian history. One of the ads is depicted above.
The Washington Metro Transit Authority rejected the ads on the grounds that they violated its advertising guidelines, which prohibit advertising “intended to influence members of the public regarding an issue on which there are varying public opinions.” The lawsuit brought out, however, a number of examples where they had run ads on controversial opinions, usually on the other side of conservative or Christian principles. However, the fact that there are “varying public opinions” should not be the deciding issue on almost any communication. The bigger issue is…IS IT TRUE? Is there evidence that the Founders’ Christian faith played a dominant role in the creation of the nation and the drafting of the Constitution, as Wallbuiders alleges?
There is not space here to fully document the answer to this, but the short answer is a resounding YES. Even though this fact has been whitewashed by secular public education, most people will tell you today they believe this to be the case, despite the best efforts to hide or obscure this fact. Even modern atheists will reluctantly admit that our heritage is Christian, not atheist, nor even Deist (a popular myth easily disproven).
All of the early settlers of the northern colonies explicitly stated that their purpose for coming here was for ‘the advance and establishment of the Christian faith’, including and especially to the Indians.[1] Both the Pilgrims and the Puritans came here to model and live out a sincere and ‘purified’ version of Christianity in a community and civic fashion.
52 of the 55 signers of the Declaration of Independence were active members of established Christian communions.[2]
If there is one man who could be considered more influential than any other to America being established as a nation, it would be George Washington. Washington himself believed that it was the providence of God that was responsible for America’s survival, victory and establishment. In his farewell address, he stated plainly,
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.
And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reasoned and experienced both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.[3]
Washington was basically saying, no matter how smart we think we may become, and how much we think ‘education’ will bring us forward, morality and the religion that informs it are indispensable to our future.
John Adams, our nation’s 2nd president, stated,
The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.
These are not ‘cherry picked’ quotes. I have books in my library filled with such writings and facts, some of which I refer you to at the end in the footnotes. They all agree with the Supreme Court in an 1892 ruling that states that the ‘mass of organic utterances’ prove our nation is a ‘Christian nation.’[5]
There is a reason America is the most free, prosperous, and generous nation on earth. It is not an accident of history or geography. A tree is known by its fruit. Despite decades of demeaning American as bigoted by our godless educators, the nations of the world still want to immigrate here more than any other place.
So, what does this mean?
If the nation was founded by Christians on Christian principles and morals, it is the godless who want to secularize us and force religious belief out of all conversations who are the outsiders.
They have tried to lie to us about our past and have failed. Some practical responses are:
You don’t have to allow your child to be indoctrinated by secular educators with pagan moral principles. You can demand they honor your beliefs and our Christian heritage.
You can demand educators teach the truth about our Christian heritage. If those who educate your children continue to attempt to distort our heritage, move them to a Christian school or home school them, so they won’t grow up hating their country and your faith. If you are unable to do either, get some of the resources cited in the footnotes, and educate your children yourself.
You should not be apologetic nor intimidated about your faith. It created the values that forged this great nation, like equality, freedom, the Protestant work ethic, and the moral code needed to built enduring and stable marriages and homes.
You don’t have to vote for a godless politician who tries to use false guilt so you will vote for them so they can ‘right the wrongs’ about our past. This false guilt has divided us and created generational poverty for many in the minority community, because it is based on a lie.
We live in the most blessed nation on earth, even with its problems, because our forefathers were given courage and clarity by their faith. It’s our turn now to fight for and keep this great inheritance.
